Standard Aquarium Volume Calculators

Standard tanks are rectangular prisms: four vertical walls at right angles and a flat floor. They include the everyday framed tank, the rimless cube, the wide breeder and the low shallow tank. All four use the same formula, but each has its own proportions, typical sizes and measurement pitfalls.

How standard tanks are measured

Measure the three interior dimensions between the inside faces of the glass. Height runs from the inside floor to the rim; fill height is applied separately. On framed tanks ignore the plastic trim, and on rimless tanks remember the glass is often thicker than it looks.

Formula differences

Every standard shape uses V = L × W × H. The cube simplifies to S³. Breeder and shallow tanks differ only in proportion, which changes how much a fill gap or substrate bed removes.

Common mistakes

  • Using the dimensions printed on the box, which are exterior measurements.
  • Entering the stand or hood height instead of the glass height.
  • Forgetting that a centre brace or built-in overflow reduces the usable interior.
